National Standard of Working Practice to support Retailers in Preventing Shoplifting
Received from Paul Netherton, Assistant Chief Constable, Demand and Prevention
The National Police Chiefs Council is working in partnership with businesses to implement a national standard of working practice to support retailers in preventing shoplifting.
I on behalf of Devon & Cornwall Police seek your support to join the companies that have already agreed to implement the common standards. This will enable the police and retailers to work together, to share information, to prevent shoplifting and deal with those crimes that do occur, in a more efficient and effective manner.
Policing will continue to remain committed to supporting your businesses by dealing robustly with offending that targets retail premises. However, our response to such crime is managed alongside other priorities to keep all people safe from harm. The Introduction of an improved process, agreed with businesses nationally, is another step toward efficiency and effectiveness.
Preventing crime is everyone's responsibility and we must work together to defeat criminality. Taking positive and pro-active action to stop offences being committed must be the first option rather than allowing it to occur and then reporting it I Invite you to view our video and accompanying booklet for more information.
The attached document shows the shoplifting reporting process and the 'SCONE' process.
Our expectation of you, as a valued partner, is that you and your staff operating within your shop/store will comply with the 'SCONE' process and implement the advice and guidance provided to prevent shoplifting.
