Improving the Environment in Fore Street
Some members may not be aware that there is a chance to secure funding for activities that may attract people/improve the environment in Fore Street. This money is held by the council as a result of payments made by Waitrose and Lidl in order to gain their planning consents and known as S.106 payment. However, this money has to be spent, or allocated for expenditure by January 2018 since any excess will then be returned to the payees.
Your executive has been considering ways in which this money could be utilised but would welcome ideas from its members. To date this money has been used to, amongst other things, pay for the subsidised 2 hour parking, the hanging baskets, the refurbishment of No. 4 to use as the community market, the children’s cinema, improved car park egress signage, grants for the May Fair/Love Saltash Festival and the talking bench. There is still, however, circa £100,000 still available.
Some of the ideas that are in mind at the moment are creating a fund to allow grants to improve shop fronts, forming a covered area over the hidden garden (outside Coral Bookmakers) to use for market stalls, marking out the parking spaces in the parking areas of Fore Street, building a new public toilet block, enhancing the use of the Saltash Card/social media to promote the town, improving town centre access signage.
If you have other ideas or would agree with any of the above, please let us know either by coming to our meeting on 3rd April or by way of the website or Facebook. Business has to find a way to spend £100,000.
